My
two collages titled Humpty Dumpty and 5x5: Move Out were
included in the Collage and Assemblage show at the Old
Church Cultural Center in July 2006.
Humpty
Dumpty
is more an acrylic painting than a collage. Papers are
enmeshed in paint, and many of the painted passages imitate
the look of collage papers, a kind of faux collage. The work
got the title Humpty Dumpty because it reminded me of the
children’s nursery rhyme - he’s a cracked egg – not
much is left, and he can’t be put back together again. I
think a lot of my work references children’s toys, blocks,
dolls and fairy tales. There’s a story there.
5x5:
Move Out
is a unique work, one of 9 collages, all 5x5 inches in the
Series (that’s where the title comes from). Each collage
includes bits of papers glued onto a color photocopy of a
collage. Because the substrate (the bottom layer) is a
photocopy print, the collage is actually reasonably flat,
only two layers deep. I work with letters, letter and word
fragments, signs and numbers that comment on urban graffiti
and contemporary mark making. |
