Drawing Collage

I think drawing and collage are perfect together and always show up in my abstract approach to collage.

Over the past 6 month, I’ve spent less time in the studio and more time at my computer writing about 8 artists I curated into the exhibition DRAWING THE LINE at the Pelham Art Center, Pelham, NY (February 16-April 2, 2023). I like to write and loved learning about each artist’s studio practice and exhibition history.

People say the exhibition is fabulous and showcases contemporary drawing with an amazing range of media. The Pelham Art Center has scheduled a closing reception with a program with the artists on Saturday, March 25, 2023, 1:00-3:00 pm. Link to Art of Collage and read about the 8 artists.

My own background is drawing and design and that’s why I was the right person to curate this exhibition. This PEEK post includes 4 images of my work, and shows how I include drawing in collage. In the 4 works below, 3 are collages I created as samples for Create with Collage, a class I teach at the Pelham Art Center. One drawings was created for fun – me playing with acrylic paint, papers and mixed media.

Nikkal, Drawing Lines

The image above is a 11×14 inch collage on paper I created as a sample for a collage class I teach. It includes white acrylic paint, pencil, and thin strips of painted papers that become lines in a collage that’s a drawing.

Nikkal, Drawing a Face

The image above is a 14×11 inch collage on paper that’s an abstract portrait collage. It shows lines, dots, patterns, text, paint and fabric. Many students love to create portrait collage.

Nikkal, Drawing 100% Obsessed

The image above is a 14×11 inch collage on paper that shows horizontal strips with magazine papers and text that’s “100% Obsessed” to inspire students who want to include text. I have a video tutorial at nikkal.com that shows how I created this collage.

Nikkal, Drawing with Pencil and Collage

The image above started as a monoprint. Notice all the pencil lines, and lines created where papers touch. This work is part of the recent series titled Curvy Geometric 2.

Returning to the studio:

I am ready to return to my normal studio schedule and plan to spend less time writing. I have no regrets for the time spent writing. I expect to see more drawing in my work in the future as a result of this focus on curating an exhibition about contemporary approaches to drawing.

Contact me and schedule a studio visit to see my work at Media Loft in New Rochelle, NY.
